Chelsea was nominated in the Volunteer of the Year—People and Community category against some very worthy nominees—and won!!

The awards were presented by cricket legend Steve Waugh, and hosted by Suzie Ellerman, along with Erica Hodge and Marty Haynes from the i98fm breakfast show. This is what Chelsea had to say:

“It was an absolute honour to be nominated for the Volunteer of the Year—People and Community at these inaugural awards—and such a thrill to win! I am so grateful to the wonderful girls on the management committee, not only for nominating me, but for supporting me and working hard together to accomplish our common goals. It was a great privilege for me to represent Raise The Gong at the Local Hero Awards, and a sensational experience to win! Thanks all xxxx”

Almost 1600 Relay for life walkers took to the tracks of Wollongong’s Beaten Park at 10am on Saturday morning for an overnight walking event aimed at celebrating local cancer survivors. The day kicked off with the famous survivor walk at 10am. Over 100 survivors walked proudly, sporting a purple satin sash across their chest to signify the many tough journeys they had endured.

As the day drew to an end the night’s activities began with the Ceremony of Hope which commemorated those that had past with a memoir and lap of remembrance. As the night darkened, the stroke of midnight brought out the wild side of the walkers. It was Witch Hour. A yearly tradition to add a little excitement for the early morning walkers meant dressing up in Halloween gear, nothing to gory or frightful. The  relay wrapped up with an 8am Sunday morning breakfasts for the walkers still in the game and those that snuck back for the early morning feed before the finish line was drawn at 10am.  Congratulations to everyone who supported and participated in the event.  We will all be anticipating the event next year and will be sure to get ourselves a super organised and enthusiastic team!
